German Geosciences Olympiad

The umbrella organization of the geosciences DVGeo has been organizing the German Earth Science Olympiad for schoolchildren since 2023. This nationwide competition builds on school knowledge from geography, chemistry, physics and biology and provides in-depth insights into the geosciences. The German Earth Science Olympiad is also the national selection competition for the established International Earth Science Olympiad (IESO).

The German Geosciences Olympiad was conceived by representatives of the DVGeo's supporting organizations from the fields of geology, geophysics, palaeontology and mineralogy. The aim is to arouse pupils' interest in geosciences. Pupils from year 9 to Q1 (qualification year 1 for the Abitur) can take part.

Under the direction of Dr. Reneta Valkova, the students of grades 9, 10 and 11 of the International High School Niederwürschnitz (51 students in total) took part in an online test on November 7, 2024 - in 45 minutes they answered very tricky questions on geology, mineralogy, geophysics, paleontology and hydrogeology.

There were over 3,000 entries for this challenge nationwide, so it is all the more pleasing that two of our Year 11 students were awarded third prize and a bronze certificate - congratulations Joana and Konstantin!
